Fretboard Diagrams

When you are learning a new scale, here’s some practice you can do without touching the instrument. Work out all the fretboard positions of each note in the scale.

The diagram shows this for D Dorian.

Then you can think about how to navigate around this.  You need a mental picture like this for every mode that interests you.  It may help to do this for every key, or selected keys.  But that may take a long time, so don’t be overwhelmed, there’s no hurry.

The good news is that the picture is the same for C major (add 1 to each number), E phrygian (subtract 1) etc.
